So we had an entire group of users lose network connectivity a few months back at a remote site.
This plant was growing in size so we figured that one of the fiber installers must have knocked a switch offline while installing some fiber runs that day.
Turns out a user walked into an office, removed the uplink patch cable from a switch and used it to plug their laptop into the network in one of our conference rooms because someone had left the door unlocked.
We found out because he walked by after me being on the phone for 2 hours with the site manager and overheard me asking about a “blue” cable that was supposed to be plugged in.
All I heard in the background was, “Shit, is that cable important?… I couldn’t find a laptop cable so I just used this one to plug in to the conference room, there were so many I didn’t think it mattered”.
